Meet Niko, My Birthday Present

My birthday is not until next Monday but I was thrilled when Jon asked me yesterday if I wanted my birthday present early.  Well now let me think…. who wants to wait for a present?  Do I want to? Nope.  So Jon drove me down to Best Buy after telling me he had done all the research and wanted to get me THIS….. my new Nikon D3100.

Please join me in my happy dance.  La la la la. :) So, this camera has more buttons than I have fingers.  Actually, I just counted it has 40… yeah 40 buttons.  I am not afraid to admit that I only know what 2 of them do.  I know how to turn it on and I know which button takes the picture.   Oh we also figured out which button releases the lens so it can be switched.  So I know what 3 buttons do but that is IT!  I have a lot to learn.

If you have followed this blog for a while you know that one of my goals for the year is to learn how to take pictures well.  I believe this is going to really help in that department.  I am so excited to learn what the other 37 buttons do.  I had a chance to play a little today and see what I could do with my 3 button education.  I took the same pictures with my old camera (a green FinepixZ Fugifilm z20) then the same picture with Niko… yes I think my new camera deserves a name his name shall be “Niko”  Let me share the results here….

Ahhhh makes my heart pitter patter.  My 3 button education pictures are not too bad in my opinion.  So much to learn though.  I really think this will be a huge improvement in many departments.  First, it will be great for you.  Blogs with lots of quality pictures are great, I hope to have one of those blogs.  Second, the Made By Meg website will benefit with quality pictures of my jewelry for customers to see all the details of what they would like to purchase.  Third, Jon and I want to be able to capture all the fun things that we do.  We have 3 weddings coming up this summer and that is just an example of events we would like to be able to capture.   Do you know of any great intro to photography blogs that I could start with? Preferably one that will not laugh at my 3 button education.  Now where is that manual?

Thank you Jon! I heart you.

I got this camera in November ( my old Nikon was demoted to my back up camera) You will love this. I took a photography Cert course offered at Horry/Georgetown Community College. Best thing I ever did was get out of those “auto” modes and learn how to use all of the manual settings. Have fun!

Good to hear Cathy! Thanks for the reassurance… I did not do any research Jon did it all and I totally trusted his judgment. I am glad to hear someone else has the same one and is happy with it. Yes… I can’t wait to dive into manual settings so I can really see what it can do. I will have to look into HGTC to see what they have available although I don’t know how I feel about being back in a classroom I am more of a self taught kind of gal. I guess it is a good back up if I really am overwhelmed. ;)

Awesome! What a great gift. A better camera is on my list, as well. I love the difference between the two flower shots!! Can’t wait to see more pictures from you with the new camera. :)

I would love to take some pictures of your new products for you Betsy. But I don’t think “hire” would be the right word….lol. More like would you let me practice on your beautiful creations?

At first I thought it was a puppy,,,,,,,or a baby…………………………..LOL!! What a difference in crispness of the pictures! Have fun learning about all the buttons to push!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Thanks Sylvia! I know I was surprised at the difference too. I have heard before that the camera does not make a difference it is the artist behind the camera…. I am not so sure about that now. I think it must be a combination of the two.

Your “old camera” took the picture of “Niko”???…….ha ha! Wonder what it was thinking!(I can picture them “talking” to each other….like on Toy Story!)……

hahaha that is really funny Sylvia. Yes it is kind of sad. Our green camera has been good to us. We first purchased it for our honeymoon. But, it is time to move on.
